Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on Ghanaians to draw inspiration from the legacy of Dr. Ephraim Koku Amu, emphasizing the need to uphold ethical leadership, self-reliance, and national unity.
Speaking at the official launch of a comprehensive biography on the life and works of the renowned nationalist, poet, and theologian, the Vice President praised Dr. Amu’s commitment to preserving Ghanaian heritage through music, poetry, and the arts. The event, organized by the Ephraim Amu Foundation, celebrated his profound impact on Ghana’s cultural consciousness.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang described Dr. Amu as a symbol of resistance and revival, citing his defiance of colonial constraints and his efforts to instill a strong sense of patriotism among Ghanaians. She referenced one of his most iconic compositions, “Yɛn Ara Asaase Ni,” as a powerful call to unity and national pride, urging citizens to embody its message in addressing contemporary challenges.
“As we reflect on Dr. Amu’s contributions, we must recognize that his ideals of ethical leadership, self-reliance, and cultural preservation remain as relevant today as they were in his time,” she stated. “It is through such principles that we can consolidate our national identity and build a future that honors our past.”
The Vice President urged Ghanaians, particularly leaders and young people, to adopt the values championed by Dr. Amu in their daily lives. She emphasized the importance of promoting indigenous culture, fostering unity, and upholding integrity in governance and civic engagement.
“As a nation, we must take pride in our history and traditions, not merely as a form of remembrance but as a guiding force for our present and future,” she admonished. “Let us learn from Dr. Amu’s dedication and apply it to the challenges we face today.”
Professor Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that celebrate Ghanaian heritage and strengthen national identity, pledging continued investment in arts, culture, and education.
