The Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, has paid a working visit to the Accra Senior High School centre where the ongoing teacher licensure examination is being conducted.

A total of 37,000 candidates across the country are sitting for this year’s examination. Of the number, 5,000 are rewriting the exam while 32,000 are writing it for the first time.

During his visit, the Minister interacted with candidates and encouraged them to give off their best, stressing government’s commitment to support aspiring teachers through policy reforms. He assured first-time candidates that those who do not pass will be given another opportunity to rewrite the examination.

Hon. Iddrisu reaffirmed his earlier directive to the National Teaching Council (NTC) to provide a final window for the previous cohort of unsuccessful candidates to resit the exam before the August 30 deadline. According to him, this move is part of the government’s plan to phase out the current licensure examination model and integrate it into the final year assessments of teacher training institutions.

“We are honouring the manifesto pledge. While we welcome suggestions, we will not compromise on quality. We are committed to improving the quality of teachers,” the Minister stated.

He further stressed the need to build a strong professional foundation for Ghana’s teachers, highlighting continuous assessment and professional development as critical tools to enhance teaching standards.

“When teachers teach, learners learn,” he emphasized.

The Education Minister’s visit forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry to ensure transparency, fairness, and inclusiveness in Ghana’s teacher qualification process while aligning future reforms with the broader goal of improving educational outcomes nationwide.
