Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to address overlaps in the implementation of the teacher trainee allowances and the “No Fees Stress” policy.
Speaking at the inauguration of 10 colleges of education at GTEC in Accra, Mr. Iddrisu underscored the government’s commitment to sustaining both policies, despite the huge financial burden they pose on the state. He disclosed that the government is expected to spend between GH¢400 million and GH¢500 million annually to keep the initiatives running.
The Minister also outlined a long-term financing strategy for education. He proposed that 2.5 percent of the country’s petroleum revenue be dedicated to human capital development. Additionally, he called for the establishment of a Scholarship and Disbursement Authority to provide sustainable funding support for students across tertiary institutions.
According to Mr. Iddrisu, education remains central to Ghana’s growth, and ensuring predictable funding will prevent future challenges in the delivery of policies aimed at supporting teacher trainees and other students.
The inauguration ceremony brought together stakeholders in the education sector, including officials of GTEC, principals of colleges of education, and other government representatives.
