GRA Open to Engagement with Spare Parts Dealers Over Tax Concerns

Story by George Yawson Vineh

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has expressed its readiness to engage Abossey Okai Spare Parts Traders Association  to address concerns raised of unfair burden on spare parts traders relating to the new Value Added Tax regime.

This assurance came through a press statement issued on Wednesday 10 February, 2026 issued by the authority’s the Communication and Public Affairs department.

The association say while they remain committed to fulfilling their tax obligations, they are worried about what they describe as inconsistent valuation practices at the ports, high import charges, and the cost of doing business. According to them, these challenges are affecting profit margins and, in some cases, forcing dealers to pass on the burden to consumers.

In response, GRA acknowledged the concerns and emphasized that the Authority is not only a revenue mobilization body but also a partner in national development. They stressed that dialogue with stakeholders remains key to improving compliance and ensuring fairness in the tax system.

The Authority further indicated that the change from 4% Flat Rate to 2% will not result in increased prices neither does the increase in the VAT registration threshold does not lead to price and market distortion rather helps to reduce cost of doing business in Ghana amongst other benefits.

GRA says the price increases currently being observed are the result of a transitional pricing error- the failure to remove now-deductible input VAT from cost calculations – and not a consequence of the policy itself.

The Authority has already established a joint technical team with the Ghana Union of Traders’
Associations (GUTA) to support businesses through this transition, including practical guidance
on VAT record-keeping, input tax claims, and correct pricing. The GRA stands ready to extend this support to the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Traders Association and any other trade group that requires assistance.

GRA also encouraged spare parts dealers to take advantage of its taxpayer education programmes and digital platforms designed to simplify tax filing and payment processes.
