Local Government Minister announces one-week long clean-up ahead of Chieistmas celebration

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has announced a one-week nationwide National Sanitation Day exercise as part of efforts to keep the country clean ahead of the Christmas festivities.

The exercise, which will be observed across all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, is aimed at improving environmental cleanliness, preventing sanitation-related diseases, and presenting a clean image of the country as it prepares to receive visitors during the festive season.

Speaking to the media on Saturday December 13, 2025, the Minister said the week-long sanitation exercise will involve desilting of drains, collection of refuse, clearing of choked gutters, and general clean-up activities and advocate the involvement of the general public in making Ghana clean in the festive season.

Adding that he will soon be visiting  the MMDCEs unannounced to ensure whether they are on top of their job in making sure their district partake in the cleanup exercise. He stressed that sanitation remains a shared responsibility and called on residents, traders, institutions, and corporate bodies to actively participate in the exercise.

The Minister further warned that sanitation laws will be strictly enforced during the period, adding that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives will be held accountable for the state of cleanliness in their jurisdictions.

He expressed optimism that the initiative will help reduce the outbreak of sanitation-related illnesses and ensure a safe and healthy environment for Ghanaians and visitors during the Christmas season.

The one-week National Sanitation Day forms part of the government’s renewed commitment to environmental cleanliness and public health nationwide.
