The Ministry of Transport has reaffirmed government’s resolve to unlock the full potential of Ghana’s marine and aquatic resources through the development of a National Blue Economy Strategy.
Speaking on behalf of the Hon. Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, at the National Blue Economy Strategy Consultative Workshop held on 4th September 2025 at the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Auditorium, the Ministry underscored the critical role of water resources in Ghana’s economic transformation.
The workshop, themed “Our blue resources are indeed our future”, brought together stakeholders from government, the diplomatic community, private sector, academia, civil society, and coastal communities.
Participants engaged in deliberations on the draft National Blue Economy Strategy, which seeks to integrate sustainable practices into sectors such as fisheries, shipping, offshore energy, eco-tourism, and aquaculture.

The Minister emphasized that the strategy is designed to generate jobs, improve livelihoods, and ensure environmental sustainability while contributing to national development.
He highlighted challenges such as overfishing, Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, marine pollution, and climate change, stressing the need for coordinated action to protect Ghana’s coastal and marine ecosystems.
Key focus areas of the draft strategy include Blue Health, Blue Wealth, Blue Knowledge, Blue Finance, Blue Equity, and Safety and Security, all aimed at positioning Ghana as a leader in sustainable ocean governance.
The Minister further called for innovation, investment, data-driven research, and community participation to ensure the success of the initiative.

Government reiterated its commitment, under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to ensure that Ghana’s blue resources serve as a foundation for wealth creation and sustainable socio-economic growth.
The consultative process marks a major step towards transforming the draft into a robust national blueprint that safeguards marine resources while driving prosperity for present and future generations.
