The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, held a press conference in Accra following the successful 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which took place from September 4-6 in Beijing. The media briefing provided an opportunity for journalists, think tanks to gain deeper insights into the outcomes of the summit and the evolving relationship between Ghana and China.

The gathering, which was the Ambassador’s first official press briefing since his appointment, took place at his residence and was attended by members of the press, think tanks such as the China-Ghana Friendship Association, Africa-China Centre for Policy Advocacy, and the Socialist Movement of Ghana.

Ambassador Tong, in his opening remarks, underscored the historical connection between China and Africa, drawing parallels between the two regions’ shared struggles against colonialism and imperialism. He noted, “The bond between China and Africa is not just a relationship; it is a partnership forged in the fires of history. Both sides have stood together through challenges, and we will continue to do so for mutual benefit.”

Reflecting on the key takeaways from the 2024 FOCAC Summit, the Chinese envoy announced a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation between China and Africa over the next three years. “China has pledged USD 50.6 billion to support ten key initiatives, including trade facilitation, infrastructure development, healthcare improvement, and green energy projects,” he said, adding that these efforts are part of a broader vision to enhance development and sustainability across Africa.

Addressing the growing geopolitical discourse, reaffirmed China’s support for African unity, a cause championed by several African leaders. “China is fully supportive of Africa’s vision for unity and self-determination. We believe in a future where Africa leads, free from external interference,” Tong emphasized.

The press briefing also featured remarks from former Ghanaian Ambassador to China, H.E. Anani Demuyakor, who serves as the National Chairman of the Ghana-China Friendship Association. In his address, Ambassador Demuyakor lauded China’s system of governance, stating, “China’s practice of communism has led to tremendous progress. Ghana and other African countries could benefit from adopting similar models tailored to our unique contexts.”

In summing up the significance of the 2024 FOCAC Summit, Ambassador Tong hailed the event as a triumph for both China and Africa, reaffirming their joint commitment to shared prosperity and a more equitable global order. “The outcome of this summit lays the groundwork for a future where the Global South takes a leading role in shaping a fair and inclusive world,” he concluded.

As Ghana continues to deepen its ties with China, the conversations initiated at this press briefing mark the beginning of a new phase in the partnership, one characterized by increased collaboration, mutual respect, and a shared vision for sustainable development.
