The National Democratic Congress’s Vice Presidential Candidate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has made a generous donation of GHS50,000 to the Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT) Cancer Foundation to support the treatment of teachers who are cancer patients.
According to the foundation, cancer cases are surging among teachers and their families, with the cost of treatment being beyond the reach of many patients, leading to significant financial strain.
Presently, the average cost of treating cancer patients in Ghana ranges from GH₵45,000 to GH₵250,000, as a result, the Foundation has prioritised preventive education, treatment, and sustainable management of the disease.
As part of its initiative to combat cancer sustainably, the Ghana Cancer Foundation is running a fundraising campaign to solicit donations from everyone whose life has been touched by a teacher, aiming to help save their lives from cancer and related illnesses.
It is in light of this challenge that the NDC running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang made a generous donation of GHS50,000 to the GNAT Cancer Foundation on.
According to her it is an undeniable fact that the treatment of cancer is very expensive thus any help extended will go a long way in supporting the treatment of cancer patients within the teaching fraternity.
“I want to appeal to the public that a fund like this has been set up. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is, and I am also appealing to all the unions to come on board. Regardless of how you grow up to become, regardless of the profession you follow, you would have gone through school, and I will urge all to show empathy to support this initiative”, she earnestly requested.
She also commended GNAT for setting up the cancer foundation to assist with the treatment of its members while presenting a banker’s draft to the board of the Foundation at its office in Accra.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Foundation, Chairman of the fundraising committee, Christian Yaw Adinkra, commended Professor Opoku-Agyemang for the donation and called on others to emulate her kind gesture.
