Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has emphasized that Ghana’s relations with China must go beyond infrastructure projects to deliver sustainable local development, particularly for the nation’s youth.
Speaking at the celebration of the 76th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 65th Anniversary of China–Ghana Relations, the Vice President praised China’s contributions but insisted on a forward-looking focus.
“We are determined to ensure that our trade and our relations translate into sustainable local development,” she said. “And we want to emphasise our brilliant, determined youth.”
Professor Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged China’s role in Ghana’s growth story, noting that the partnership has provided roads, bridges, hospitals, educational facilities, and cultural exchanges. “We acknowledge the roles of China in development of our infrastructure,” she remarked. “But in all of this, we want our emphasis to go on our youth.”
She further stressed that Ghana’s young population must remain at the heart of future cooperation. “Our investments and partnerships must not only build structures but also create opportunities that secure the future of our next generation,” she added.
The anniversary event highlighted six decades of Ghana–China ties, with both countries pledging to deepen cooperation in trade, culture, and development.
