The Fathers Day Love

Story by George Yawson Vineh

Father’s Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June to honor fathers, father figures, and paternal bonds. This year, it falls on June 15, 2025. The day is a tribute to the love, care, and support that fathers provide to their families.

This celebration was first introduced by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1909, inspired by Mother’s Day. Dodd wanted to recognize her father’s sacrifices as a single parent raising six children after her mother’s death. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. It took 62 years for Father’s Day to become a permanent national holiday in the United States, signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1972.
Father’s Day is celebrated differently in various countries including Ghana.

Ways to Celebrate Father’s Day
-Spending quality time with dad, such as sharing a meal or engaging in activities he enjoys

  • Giving thoughtful gifts, like personalized items or experiences
  • Writing heartfelt letters or creating handmade cards
  • Planning outdoor activities, such as hiking or sports
  • Simply expressing gratitude and appreciation for father’s love and support
It is on this background I call on all mothers, children and women in general to use this day to make their fathers feel their place in their lives.

Significance of Father’s Day
Father’s Day acknowledges the vital role fathers play in shaping their children’s lives, providing emotional support, guidance, and values. It’s an opportunity to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, and other male role models.

A very happy Father’s Day to all fathers out there especially, Mr. Kodzovi Vineh (Major Rtd), Comrade Kwesi Pratt Jnr, H.E John Dramani Mahama.
