The Flamingos of Nigeria have set up a quarterfinal rematch between them and their counterparts from the USA after beating Dominican Republic 1-0 in their final Group A game at the ongoing 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
The Nigerians netted a late goal after breaking the hosts’ defence to qualify the team for the next stage of the tournament.
Shakirat Moshood scored the sole decider in the 89th minute following a 25-yard strike, giving the visitors all three points while leaving a determined Dominican Republic heartbroken on Wednesday morning.
Despite the Dominican goalkeeper’s defensive skills, thwarting the visitors’ attempts time and time again, there was little she could do with the strike that settled it.
The victory enabled Coach Bankole Olowookere’s side to end the group phase with three straight wins and also set up a second straight quarterfinal clash against USA.
Meanwhile, Santo Domingo, the national capital of the host nation recorded the highest attendance of any Dominican Republic national team game with a record high 13,353 spectators.
Nigeria will lock horns with the USA in the quarterfinal on Saturday.
