Deputy Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar has opined that the media has been a critical force in shaping public discourse and ensuring that democratic principles are upheld in Ghana.
Delivering her keynote address at the twenty-eighth GJA Media Awards in Accra, she urged all media practitioners to be agents of credibility, fairness and accuracy in the upcoming 2024 elections.
She also urged journalists to uphold the highest ethical standards in their watchdog role without fear or favour in order to protect Ghana’s Democracy.
The Annual GJA Media Awards aims to promote high journalistic standards and reward excellence.
This year’s edition was very significant as it climaxed the 75th Anniversary celebrated under the theme: “75 Years of Excellence in Journalism: The Role of the Media in Democratic Governance and Elections.”
The event was graced by dignitaries including the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, the United Nations Resident Coordinator to Ghana, Charles Paul Abani and others.
GBC’s Beatrice Senadju was crowned the female journalist and radio documentary reporter of the year.
Speaking to the press on the sideline of the event, she narrated how she assembled the story that made her won the award.
