Licensure Exams to End on August 30 as New Teacher Qualification Framework Rolls Out

By Stanley Kwabla Arku

The Ministry of Education has directed the National Teaching Council (NTC) to wrap up all processes related to the final sitting of the existing teacher licensure examinations by August 30, 2025.

This directive, issued by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, was delivered during the inauguration of the newly reconstituted board of the NTC. The Minister stressed the need for urgency in concluding the current licensure examination regime as government prepares to transition into a new system for assessing teacher qualifications.

“The last of it must be concluded not later than 30th August. If there is a last opportunity for those who sat and couldn’t make it, that process should not travel beyond 30th August. You are to work with the registrar, get us a firm date, and we’ll put that off,” Mr. Iddrisu said.

The Minister explained that the directive is part of a wider reform agenda aimed at improving teacher training and classroom outcomes. The new framework, he noted, will shift focus from standardised examinations to a more practical, skills-based approach, emphasising academic grounding and classroom experience over formal testing.

He praised the newly inaugurated board for its forward-looking proposals and charged members to work closely with the Registrar of the NTC to ensure a smooth transition.

The decision to phase out the existing licensure exams marks a major shift in Ghana’s education policy, with stakeholders anticipating further details on the structure and implementation of the new teacher qualification regime in the coming months.
