Statement By Nana Ohene-Ntow on the Vandalization of the Memory of Ghana’s First President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah by NPP Presidential Running Mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Yesterday Tuesday July 9th, 2024, will forever be remembered as one of greatest days of shame in the Republican history of Ghana. For on that day, a citizen of free, republican Ghana, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a minister in the current government of the Republic, chose to denigrate the name and memory of the man, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah who was used by Almighty God, to spearhead the achievement of republican status for our nation.

By some set of strange coincidences, Napo and his NPP chose to commit this despicable act in the very month in which Ghana achieved republican status, and the NPP government of President Akufo-Addo had downgraded the celebration of 1st July as Ghana’s Republic Day.

In his attempt to over glorify whatever the achievements of President Akufo-Addo, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, displayed probably the highest level of a lack of public decency, decorum, deference and dignity by referring to Dr Kwame Nkrumah as: “mo Kwame Nkrumah no…”, to wit: “that your Kwame Nkrumah “, and then went ahead to totally rubbish the name, memory, achievements and legacy of Ghana’s undisputed man of destiny- President Kwame Nkrumah.

When some of us were saying that the charge of arrogance against Napo was not a mere tug but a manifestation of his real character, and that he is unfit to be considered for the high office of Vice President of the Republic, some tried to defend him. Others even went to the extent of suggesting that he should be repackaged. Of course it was only a matter of time, and Napo was going to show his true colors, as he did yesterday.

I invite all decent minded and reasonable Ghanaians to roundly condemn the behavior and utterances of Matthew Opoku Prempeh, currently is aspiring to the second highest office of the land, but has chosen to denigrate the name and memory of the man whom history calls The Father of free, independent, Republican Ghana. This level of insult, impudence and disrespect has not been shown only to the name and memory of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, but to the entire nation of Ghana.

I know in politics people advise that you notoriety, good or bad, but in my considered opinion, by this singular act of indiscretion, Napo has procured for himself public disgust and opprobrium forever, and Ghanaians will never forgive him, but will forever hold Napo in contempt!
