WACAM calls on government to make report on Appeatse disaster public.

A year has already passed since Land and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor promised on the floor of parliament to make reports by the Appeatse Disaster Committee public.

At a press confab earlier today to launch a report on the incidents themed, ‘analysis of the situation a year on’, WACAM, a human rights and environmental mining advocacy in Ghana cannot fathom why government is still holding on to the public document.

Today marks exactly a year since the Appeatse incident which wiped away almost the entire community of about 1,000 residents and left almost half of them injured. Some of the survivors of the tragedy are still fighting for their lives while others now live with permanent disabilities, such as visual and hearing impairments. WACAM is seeking answers from government on the non-publication of the report.

Associate Executive Director of WACAM, Mrs. Hannah Owusu-Koranteng express worry about the economic and social state of the victims.

A victim of the tragedy shared to the media how she feels one year after the incident.

The launched reports recommends a full implementation of the laws guiding companies of that sort and a complete review of LI 2177 for strict liability for any company that fails to adhere to the provision of the regulation.
