CPP Presidential Primary: Who Partners Flagbearer-Elect As Running Mate?

5/09/2024

Questions arise following the victory of the immediate past Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah as the party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The flagbearer contest which was between the party’s former Chairperson and a private legal practitioner, Nana Yaw Anokye Frimpong as the only contenders in the race, gave reasons to party sympathisers and the public to mull over the absence of the 2020 presidential candidate, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet on the ballot.

Clouded in this billow of uncertainty, one is compelled to believe that Mr. Ivor Kobina Greenstreet has equally lost interest in holding the forefront for the CPP as did Paa Kwesi Nduom in past election seasons.

But is that really the case? If yes, has the resolution of the party’s internal political turmoil really effected any positive change to amass the needed support for its power recapturing agenda in subsequent elections?

Held across all the sixteen regions, the flagbearer election came to a successful conclusion and the Electoral Commission subsequently declared Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah as the flagbearer-elect having garnered 763 votes.

Her contender, Nana Yaw Anokye Frimpong also polled 586 votes out of the total 1,360 votes cast. 11 ballots were rejected.

In a brief victory speech, Nana Frimpomaa called for unity and total support while urging party members to eschew any form of interpersonal conflict to ensure the CPP’s victory in December this year.

“In every election, one person will emerge as the winner, and it is essential for everyone to stand together to ensure unity and cohesion. I thank all who voted for me and even those who did not. My win was decisive and represents the voice of the masses,” she stated.

Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah expressed optimism in winning power from the NPP and NDC in the general elections. But who helps drive this vision to fruition as the party’s running mate?

The presidential primary was held nationwide on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
