We’re confident of addressing SHS placement concerns before reopening date – Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education has expressed confidence in addressing concerns of parents and Basic Education Certificate Education (BECE) candidates who have concerns about their Senior High School placements.

Addressing the media following a visit to the National School Placement Resolution Centre in Accra on Thursday, 9th October, 2025, Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, Hasmin Mohammed said the centre has been helpful in helping the ministry address outstanding issues.

He said the ministry had successfully reduced the huge number of people who had besieged the place in a  desperate attempt to have their problems rectified.

“We have realized that we have been able to decongest the crowd because we have moved in a lot of personnel to attend and listen to their issues and you yourself can now attest to the fact that we have decongested their place.”

He indicated that the development will allow officials at the centre to attend to the needs of others swiftly and well before students are due to report to their various schools.

“Going forward we will be attending to their issues with speed and when that is attended then they are satisfied. Then we will not have more crowds gathering here at the official center,” he noted.

Asked whether the ministry was actively considering postponing the initially announced 18th October as reopening date for Senior High School first year students, the press aide said there was ample time to address outstanding issues.

He said the minister and his team will assess the success of the exercise and decide according.

“Well, we still have much time and when there is the need for that, for that, I think management and higher authorities will take a decision on that. But for now, we are working with the time frame that we have given to ourselves. We believe that we can be able to attend to them.”

In the last few weeks, parents and students who visited the SHS Resolution Center at the GNAT Hall have lauded the orderly and swift manner in which school placement issues are being resolved.

More than 5,000 people turned up at the center, many of them expressing relief at the efficiency of the process.

It is one of the several school placement resolution centers which opened nationwide on Friday, September 18, 2025 to receive complaints from parents and guardians.

The centers, set up in major regional capitals, are designed to handle such complaints, verify placement details, and provide quick redress.

Senior education officials including the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak has visited the place to assure parents and candidates of government’s commitment to resolving all outstanding issues ahead of the scheduled reopening date for new students.

The Mahama administration intends to expand the Free SHS program started in 2017 by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government to ensure access to all Ghanaian students while improving upon the quality of teaching, learning and infrastructure.
