LPG Blames Worsening Flooding Situation On Government Failure To Prioritize Safety And Welfare Of Ghanaians

Story by George Yawson VINEH

The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has blamed the worsening flooding situation across parts of the country on what it describes as the government’s persistent failure to prioritize the safety, welfare, and long-term wellbeing of Ghanaians.

According to the party, recurring floods that continue to destroy homes, businesses, and public infrastructure are a clear indication of poor planning, weak enforcement of environmental regulations, and inadequate investment in drainage and flood prevention systems.

The LPG argued that successive warnings from experts and environmental agencies have largely been ignored, leaving many communities vulnerable whenever heavy rains occur.

It noted that the annual loss of lives and property due to flooding should not be accepted as a normal occurrence.

The party further criticized authorities for allowing indiscriminate construction on waterways and in flood-prone areas, saying such practices have contributed significantly to the severity of flooding in many urban centres.

The LPG called on government to take urgent and decisive action by improving drainage infrastructure, enforcing planning regulations, desilting gutters regularly, and investing in sustainable flood management measures.

It also urged authorities to provide immediate support and relief to affected families and communities, many of whom have suffered significant losses as a result of the recent floods.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to advocating policies that place the safety and welfare of citizens at the centre of national development and called for greater accountability in addressing the country’s recurring flooding challenges.
