The New Patriotic Party in the Effutu Constituency has demolished the famous Kwame Nkrumah Rest House at Wonsum, a suburb of Winneba in the constituency in the Central Region of Ghana.
This modest building was the residence for the Founder and First President of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah anytime he was in Winneba.
He constructed the building because he visited Winneba often, due to the exceptional inspiration he received from the people to his causes, most importantly, the fight for Ghanaโs independence.
Owing to the tourism potential, memory, and prestige that came with the siting of the building in Winneba, it has been reserved by successive traditional and political leaders of Effutu, and was popularly called Rest House, which periodically attracted tourists from far and near.
In a statement, the NDC said โConsidering the recent overwhelmingly condemned โMo Kwame Nkrumah Noโ statement by the 2024 NPP Running Mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and the subsequent pronouncements by stalwarts of the current administration on Nkrumahโs legacies, it cannot be disputed that the NPP and its functionaries are bent on deliberately extinguishing Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumahโs great legacies to the present and unborn generations, in spite of the global glory and verifiable development that Ghana has earned from his enviable leadership service.โ
The NDC in Effutu is therefore calling for an immediate suspension of any activity on the land which cannot address an immediate social need, and an apology to the Effutu people, Ghanaians and the World, for this avoidable harm they have caused perpetually to history and heritage, as far as Dr. Kwame Nkrumahโs relationship with Winneba is concerned.
