The Health Services Workers Union (HSWU) of Trades Union Congress have celebrated its 80th anniversary under the Theme: Achieving Universal Health Coverage:
The Role of the Health Worker.”
The event held at Mensvic Grand Hotel marks the Union’s significant role in healthcare delivery since its inception in 1944.
The celebration event held at the Mensvic Grand Hotel, sought to recognise the achievements of the Union and the outstanding care provided by its staff since its creation.
It also provided the chance to reflect on the Union’s important historical links to the Trades Union Congress and the vital contribution it has made in caring for its members.
General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress’ Health Services Workers Union Franklin Owusu Ansah highlighted measures put in place to improve the working conditions of its members.
According to him, there was no adequate care for caregivers, as such the government and the union’s employers needed to ensure the provision of adequate healthcare for members.
He also called on the government to improve the service conditions of workers to enhance service delivery at health facilities.

The Health Services Workers Union was initially formed in Takoradi by hospital workers advocating for their rights, and it expanded across various regions, eventually merging into the Hospital and General Health Workers Union in 1955.
It originally represented all healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, until separate associations for these groups were established after government’s intervention, leaving the HSWU to represent a wide range of other healthcare professionals.
Currently it represents over 100 categories of healthcare workers, including biomedical engineers, lab technicians, mortuary attendants, and disease control officers.
