The Minister for Housing has called for a review of the qualification requirements for contractors operating in Ghana, saying the time has come to reassess the current system to create greater opportunities for indigenous contractors.
The Minister made the call during a stakeholders’ consultative forum on “Empowering Indigenous Contractors through Structured Project Contracting for Sustainable Infrastructure Development.”
He said strengthening the capacity of local contractors is essential to ensuring that more infrastructure projects are delivered by Ghanaian companies, while also promoting sustainable development and retaining more value within the local economy.
According to the Minister, revisiting the qualification of contractors should form part of broader efforts to improve access to public projects, build the capacity of indigenous firms and ensure that contractors are adequately equipped to undertake projects to the required standards.
He further stressed the need for a structured contracting system that provides local contractors with opportunities to grow, gain experience and compete effectively in the construction industry.
The consultative forum brought together stakeholders from the construction and infrastructure sectors to discuss measures aimed at empowering indigenous contractors and creating a more sustainable framework for project delivery in Ghana.
The discussions are expected to contribute to policies that balance quality, accountability and capacity development while strengthening the participation of Ghanaian contractors in the country’s infrastructure development.
