The Airport Divisional Police Command has arrested fifty-two suspected motor riders and impounded seventy-one motorcycles during a special operation aimed at cracking down on illegal street racing and dangerous riding along the George Walker Bush Highway.
The operation was carried out on Saturday, July 26, near the Villaggio area, following intelligence that a group of riders had gathered to engage in unlawful motorcycle racing and other reckless activities.
Police in a press statement say preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects include riders from Accra, as well as others believed to have travelled from Nsawam, Kasoa, Tema, Ashaiman and Koforidua.
According to the Police, the illegal racing posed a serious danger to motorists and pedestrians while disrupting the free flow of traffic along the busy highway.
During the exercise, officers impounded a total of seventy-one motorcycles, made up of twenty-five registered Royal motorcycles, twenty-six unregistered Royal motorcycles, five power bikes and fifteen scooters.
The suspects are expected to face multiple charges, including careless and inconsiderate riding, dangerous riding, unlawful motor racing, failure to wear protective crash helmets, riding without a valid licence, using unregistered motorcycles, and failing to obtain compulsory motor insurance, among other road traffic offences.
Police say the suspects remain in custody assisting with investigations and will be processed for court. Investigations are also underway to determine whether they may have been involved in other traffic-related offences.
The Accra Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to enforcing road traffic laws and ensuring the safety of all road users. It is urging members of the public to obey traffic regulations and report unlawful road activities to the nearest Police Station or through the Police emergency numbers.
