Honourable Akwasi Opong-Fosu has officially declared his interest in contesting the National Chairmanship position of the ruling National Democratic Congress, NDC.

The former Minister of State and former Member of Parliament says his decision is driven by the need to strengthen the party’s organisational structures, reconnect with the grassroots, and promote the founding ideals of the NDC.

The race for the National Chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress has taken another turn following the official declaration of interest by Hon. Akwasi Opong-Fosu.
In announcing his decision, Hon. Opong-Fosu presented his vision around restoration, renewal and a reset of the party’s structures and systems.

He says the NDC must strengthen its internal organisation and ensure that party members at the grassroots have a meaningful role in the affairs of the party.

According to him, a strong political party requires effective systems, discipline, accountability and a clear connection between its leadership and ordinary members.

Hon. Opong-Fosu has also spoken in favour of a more merit-based approach within the party, arguing that members should have opportunities based on their skills, experience and contribution rather than simply on personal connections.

His declaration comes as the NDC prepares for its National Congress, where delegates will elect a new set of national executives.

The National Chairmanship is one of the key positions within the party’s leadership structure, with responsibilities relating to party organisation, coordination and political mobilisation.

Hon. Opong-Fosu is therefore positioning his candidacy around strengthening the party’s institutions and reviving what he describes as the core values and principles upon which the NDC was founded.

As the contest unfolds, attention will now turn to the other aspirants, their respective visions, and the issues that will shape the debate ahead of the party’s internal elections.

The event also saw the support of former Lands Minister and leading member of the NDC, Hon. Inusah Fuseni, former Greater Accra regional Minister, Hon. Nii Afotey Agbo among other key individuals of the party.

For now, Hon. Akwasi Opong-Fosu has formally joined the contest, setting the stage for what is expected to be an important leadership election within the National Democratic Congress.
