DVLA To Roll Out New Smart Vehicle Number Plate System This Year

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is preparing to roll out its new smart vehicle number plate system as part of efforts to strengthen road safety, improve vehicle identification and curb the use of fake registration plates.

The nationwide exercise which takes effect next month is expected to register more than three million vehicles starting under the new digital platform, marking one of the Authority’s biggest vehicle registration reforms. The smart number plates will be embedded with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, enabling law enforcement agencies to instantly verify the authenticity of vehicles and detect cloned or fake number plates. The system is also expected to enhance crime detection, improve traffic enforcement and support digital vehicle tracking.

According to the Driver Vehicle and Licencing Authority, the new registration regime forms part of a broader digital transformation agenda aimed at creating a secure and reliable national vehicle database. Vehicle owners will be required to register through an appointment-based process, while existing records will be migrated onto the new digital platform.

Chief Executive Officer of the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority, Julius Neequaye Kotey says the new plates will feature distinct colour codes for different categories of vehicles, including private, commercial, motorcycles and electric vehicles, making identification easier for enforcement officers aiming to register over three million cars this August.

He also called on the public to support the process, urging motorists to cooperate with the exercise and deal only with authorized DVLA offices.
The DVLA believes the introduction of the smart number plates will significantly improve accountability, enhance public safety and modernize Ghana’s vehicle registration system.
