Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cambodia’s immigration authority have both moved to debunk a widely circulating fake notice that claimed African nationals in Cambodia had been ordered to leave the country by May 31 or face arrest, imprisonment and financial penalties.
The false circular, which spread across social and traditional media platforms, purportedly targeted citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and other African countries resident in Cambodia.
In a press release issued Thursday, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said diplomatic engagements with Cambodian authorities confirmed the notice was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia. The General Department of Immigration under Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior separately issued its own clarification, describing the claims as “completely untrue.”
The Cambodian authority also named two websites, campaigneronline.com and newsghana.com, as having published the false reports in English, and directed the public to its official website and hotline for verified information.
Both governments have urged the public to disregard the discredited document and avoid sharing unverified information that could cause unnecessary fear among affected persons and their families.
Despite the fake nature of the expulsion order, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry disclosed that a number of Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia had, prior to the circulation of the notice, independently expressed a desire to return home. Through Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to Cambodia, the government has facilitated the voluntary return of 85 Ghanaian nationals between March and May 2026. Arrangements are ongoing to repatriate a further 76 nationals who have also expressed a wish to come home.
The Ministry commended the Cambodian government for its cooperation in facilitating the safe return of Ghanaian nationals, and reiterated its commitment to the welfare and protection of Ghanaians abroad.
The public has been advised to rely solely on official sources for information on matters concerning Ghanaian nationals overseas.
