Ghana To Table UN Resolution On Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade as Gravest Crime Against Humanity – Veep

Ghana is set to take a historic step at the United Nations, aiming to officially recognise the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade as one of humanity’s gravest crimes. The announcement was made by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang during the 7th AU–EU Summit in Luanda, Angola.

Addressing world leaders, the Vice President highlighted Ghana’s role as the African Union’s Champion for Reparations in 2025, emphasizing the importance of confronting historical injustices through global dialogue and collective action.

“Ghana will table a UN resolution recognising the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade as one of humanity’s gravest crimes; we call on our European partners to join us as co-authors of this historic resolution,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated.

The move signals Ghana’s determination to place reparations and historical justice at the forefront of international attention. By seeking European co-authorship, Ghana is encouraging former slave-trading nations to actively participate in acknowledging past wrongs and shaping a framework for reconciliation.

The Vice President noted that this resolution aligns with broader AU initiatives promoting justice, peace, and sustainable development across the continent. She underscored that recognition of the atrocities committed during the slave trade is an essential first step toward addressing enduring social and economic inequalities linked to the trade.

Ghana’s call comes at a critical moment as the AU designates 2025 as the Year for Reparations, positioning the country as a leading voice in championing African-led solutions to historical grievances.

The formal tabling of the resolution at the UN is expected to draw international attention, reinforcing Ghana’s role as a global advocate for justice, reparations, and historical accountability.
