The Accra Regional Police Command has shot dead a suspected armed robber and recovered an AK-47 assault rifle and 186 rounds of ammunition following a gunfight at Galoway near Agbogbloshie in Accra.
According to a signed statement and issued by the police on Wednesday September 16, 2026, the incident occurred on Thursday, September 10, 2026, after it received credible intelligence that four armed men riding two motorbikes were heading towards the Shell Filling Station near Agbogbloshie for a planned robbery operation.
A team from the Accra Regional Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Directorate, assisted by the Operational Unit, was subsequently deployed to the area.
The Police team encountered the suspected robbers at the Galoway Police Barrier, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.
One of the suspects was shot during the encounter, while the remaining three allegedly abandoned their motorbikes and fled into the area.
The injured suspect was found in possession of an AK-47 assault rifle with serial number 79-HF-3014. The weapon was fitted with a double magazine containing 136 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
Police also retrieved an additional 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition, bringing the total number of rounds recovered to 186.
The suspect was rushed to the Police Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for identification and autopsy.
Two unregistered motorbikes a Royal and an Apsonic were also recovered from the scene.
The Police say the motorcycles, firearm and ammunition have been retained as exhibits as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects and establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged planned robbery operation.
The Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property, saying it will continue to undertake intelligence-led operations to combat armed robbery and other violent crimes.
