Police Launch Manhunt for Suspects Behind Kotoku Market Disturbances

Story by George Yawson Vineh

Security agencies have intensified efforts to apprehend individuals involved in recent violent disturbances at the Adjen Kotoku Onion Market in the Greater Accra Region, following an attack that left traders in fear and disrupted commercial activities.

According to police sources, the incident occurred when a group of armed men allegedly stormed the market, reportedly linked to a rival faction seeking control over market operations. The invasion triggered chaos among traders and buyers, forcing many to flee for safety as tensions escalated.

Preliminary investigations suggest the violence stems from long-standing disagreements among different onion sellers’ associations operating within the market. The dispute, described as deeply rooted, has reportedly created divisions among traders and heightened insecurity in the area.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers were armed and issued threats aimed at driving out existing traders. The situation has raised serious concerns about safety at one of the country’s key onion distribution hubs, which plays a vital role in the supply of the commodity across Ghana.

In response, the Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt to track down the perpetrators. Authorities say intelligence-led operations are underway, and those responsible will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, police have increased their presence in and around the market to restore calm and prevent further clashes. The market has reportedly experienced temporary disruptions as security measures are enforced.

Leaders of the onion traders’ associations have called for urgent government intervention, urging stakeholders to find a lasting resolution to the dispute to prevent future violence. They warn that continued instability could affect the supply chain and lead to price hikes of onions in local markets.
The police have also appealed to the public to volunteer credible information that could assist in the ongoing investigations, assuring that all tips will be treated with strict confidentiality.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to ensure that normalcy returns fully to the market while maintaining law and order.
