A growing number of residents across various communities in Ghana have voiced their dissatisfaction with the Electricity Company of Ghana’s recent decision to replace faulty and old meters with new ones.
The initiative, which forms part of efforts to boost revenue mobilization, has sparked controversy among the citizenry.
The smart meters, which the ECG claims are designed to improve accuracy in billing and allow for more efficient monitoring of electricity usage, have been met with skepticism and frustration. Many residents argue that the switch to smart meters was implemented without sufficient consultation or consideration of their concerns.
A resident and cold store operator at Kaneshie, Nana Kwame expressed his frustration, stating that “the smart meters are supposed to be more accurate, but since they were installed, I’ve noticed an increase in my electricity bill, even though my usage hasn’t changed. It feels like we’re being forced into something without understanding its benefits or drawbacks.”
He further entreated the Electricity Company of Ghana to ensure a fair and equitable metering system.
Dennis, who resides at Lapaz, intimated that consumers should not be unfairly burdened by this transition stating, “We were not informed properly about these changes. One day, ECG officials just showed up and started replacing the meters. We are worried about the costs and how this will affect our monthly bills.”
As the controversy continues, it remains to be seen how ECG will navigate the growing dissatisfaction among its customers. The company faces the daunting task of balancing its modernization goals with the need to maintain public trust and support. For now, residents are left to hope that their voices will be heard and that a more inclusive dialogue with ECG will lead to a better understanding and smoother adaptation to the new smart metering system.
