Spaces for Change (S4C) a non governmental organization has officially launched the Civic Space Outlook, a documentary that sheds light on the state of civic space in Ghana ahead of the country’s upcoming general elections on December 7, 2024. The documentary explores key trends, drivers, and the impact of civic activities in Ghana, providing early warning signals to civic actors working to safeguard democratic freedoms in both Ghana and the broader West African region.
The event gathered a wide range of stakeholders, including civic actors, civil society organizations, and media representatives, all playing vital roles in defending the nation’s civic space. The documentary serves as a resource for assessing how Ghana’s civic environment is evolving in the run-up to the national elections, emphasizing the importance of protecting freedom of expression, association, and assembly.
In addition to the documentary launch, the event featured a Digital Security Clinic, co-organized by Civic Spaces Resource Hub and Spaces for Change, offering critical tools and knowledge to civic actors on safeguarding their digital activities. With an increasing reliance on online platforms, the clinic provided participants with essential security tips to protect their online presence and operations.
Executive Director of Spaces for Change Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri, addressed the media following the event, highlighting the importance of proactive engagement in defending democratic spaces. “The state of the civic space is a reflection of the health of democracy, and it is essential for civic actors to remain vigilant, informed, and empowered,” she remarked.
A key panel discussion featured the Deputy Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), who urged participants to report violations of civic rights to the commission. “Our doors are always open to investigate and address complaints. Civic actors must make use of the available mechanisms to ensure their rights are protected,” the Deputy Commissioner emphasized.
The launch of the Civic Space Outlook marks the beginning of S4C’s expanded presence in Ghana, following the official opening in Accra last year.
This expansion aligns with the organization’s strategic objective of promoting a vibrant civil society and nurturing a strong democratic culture in West Africa. Through its work, Spaces for Change continues to empower civic actors and foster democratic participation via research, advocacy, youth engagement, and community action.
