Ghana Summons South African Envoy Over Xenophobic Attacks On Ghanaian Nationals

Ghana has lodged a formal diplomatic protest against South Africa over a series of xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians living and working in the country.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, summoned the Acting High Commissioner of the South African High Commission in Ghana, Mr. Thando Dalamba, to formally register Ghana’s strong displeasure over the incidents, which have been widely circulated on social media.

At the centre of the summons was a troubling incident in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, where a Ghanaian legal resident was confronted by locals, asked to produce proof of his legal status, and instructed to leave South Africa and “fix his country.” The Minister described the conduct as a direct affront to the dignity and rights of law-abiding individuals.

He also flagged follow-up reports suggesting that tensions in the region are escalating, with foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, being advised to remain indoors for their safety. While no fatalities or injuries have been recorded in the current wave of incidents, Ablakwa drew attention to the sobering precedent of past xenophobic violence on the continent, which had resulted in loss of lives and property.

In making Ghana’s case, the Minister invoked the deep historical ties between the two nations, recalling Ghana’s active support for the anti-apartheid struggle, the pivotal role of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and the sacrifices made in the pursuit of South Africa’s liberation. He stressed that the harassment of law-abiding African nationals runs counter to the very principles of African solidarity and unity that both countries have long championed.

The Government of Ghana made three formal demands: immediate and effective measures to ensure the protection and safety of Ghanaian nationals in South Africa; swift intervention by the relevant authorities to prevent further escalation; and firm assurances that such incidents will not recur.

In response, the Acting High Commissioner acknowledged the concerns raised and indicated that the South African government is seized with the matter. He noted that law enforcement authorities are actively monitoring the situation and that steps are being taken to restore calm and hold those responsible accountable.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured the Ghanaian public of its continued commitment to the welfare of citizens abroad and pledged to engage the appropriate authorities until their safety is guaranteed.
