Government Reaffirms Commitment To Sustainable Oceans As Ghana Marks World Oceans Day LOCAL NEWS POLITICS by panafricantv - June 8, 2026June 8, 20260 Story by George Yawson VINEH The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and sustainably managing the country’s ocean resources as Ghana joined the rest of the world to commemorate World Oceans Day on June 8. In a press statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry for Fisheries and Aquaculture, the sector Minister, Hon. Emilia Arthur highlighted the vital role oceans play in supporting livelihoods, food security, biodiversity conservation, climate regulation, and economic growth. “Our oceans are the lifeblood of our planet. In Ghana, they provide food security, employment and cultural heritage for millions”, she stated. She further reaffirms Ghana’s commitment to transparency, innovation, and resilience in fisheriesand responsibility to protect them from overexploitation, pollution, and climate change.” As custodians, we must act with urgency and responsibility to protect them from over exploitation, pollution and climate change”. This year’s occasion provides an opportunity for stakeholders to reflect on Government officials who emphasized that the sustainable use of marine resources remains a key priority in Ghana’s efforts to promote environmental protection and the blue economy. The statement also assures the continued working with local communities, regional partners, and international organizations to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, strengthening aquaculture development and promoting compliance with conservation measures. As part of these efforts, Ghana is also expanding Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to conserve biodiversity, restore fish stocks, and enhance resilience in ocean governance. Following the declaration of Ghana’s first Marine Protected Area at Greater Cape Three Points in the Western Region, a landmark step in safeguarding critical marine habitats and strengthening ocean stewardship. As part of the World Oceans Day observance, Ghanaians were encouraged to adopt environmentally responsible practices, including reducing plastic waste, protecting coastal ecosystems, and supporting sustainable fishing activities. World Oceans Day is celebrated annually on June 8 to raise awareness of the importance of oceans and inspire action toward their conservation and sustainable use. The day serves as a reminder that healthy oceans are critical to the health of the planet and the prosperity of present and future generations.
