President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise in Agbogbloshie as part of efforts to address the country’s growing waste management challenges.
The exercise, which is expected to be completed within 90 days, will focus on the evacuation and proper disposal of accumulated waste from identified locations across the Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi.
President Mahama, speaking at the commissioning, on Friday September 17, 2026 at the Agbogbloshie landfill site said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to restore sanitation and improve the environmental conditions of communities.
The exercise is also expected to reclaim significant portions of land currently occupied by waste, with the reclaimed areas earmarked for industrial purposes.
According to President Mahana, the reclaimed land will be converted into spaces for industrial development and employment creation, particularly for the youth.
Adding that the initiative will not only improve sanitation but also create opportunities for productive economic activities through the redevelopment of the reclaimed lands.
The 90-day emergency operation is expected to involve relevant state agencies, local authorities and other stakeholders, with emphasis on efficient waste evacuation and responsible disposal.
Authorities are expected to sustain sanitation measures after the exercise to prevent the recurrence of indiscriminate waste accumulation.
The government has reiterated its commitment to transforming waste management into a more sustainable system while ensuring cleaner and healthier communities across the country.
