The opposition New Patriotic Party, the NPP, has today accused the Ghana Gold Board, GoldBod, of being responsible for the worsening galamsey crisis in the country.
The accusation was made at a press conference held at the NPP headquarters in Accra, today Tuesday, August 25th, 2026.
Addressing the media, the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, said the creation of GoldBod has created a system that allows illegally mined gold to enter the formal gold trading system.
According to him, GoldBod cannot tell the difference between gold bought from legal, licensed sources and gold dug up by illegal miners.
In his words: “GoldBod is the cause of the environmental destruction we are seeing. They are now responsible for galamsey.”
He alleged that some licensed gold buyers associated with GoldBod could be purchasing gold originating from illegal mining activities, and claimed that even GoldBod’s CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, admitted on live television that some of their licensed buyers may be doing the wrong thing.
The NPP further questioned how GoldBod verifies and traces the source of gold it purchases, and also cited the reported 1.7 billion dollar loss recorded in 2025 under the Domestic Gold Purchasing Programme.
